Onslow County Marriage BondsTranscribed by Barbara ColeEmail Barbara Cole |
These records are taken from the above-entitled book located in the Office of the Register of Deeds, Onslow County, and Jacksonville, NC. The originals are filed with the NC Department of Cultural Resources, Division of Archives and History, Raleigh, NC. The original transcription of these records was done by the National Youth Administration Project, Historical Records Survey Project of the WPA. According to the publication, Onslow County was formed from New Hanover County in 1734. The act, which authorized the marriage bonds, was passed in 1741 and it remained the law until 1868 when the present form of marriage license was authorized. For purposes of this transcription, the data will be entered alphabetically by groom and the letters of the alphabet will be assigned as Section A, Section B, Section C, etc. The entries will be in the following formatting (where the information is available): Groom, Bride, Date of Bonds, Bondsman, and Witness. Any entry of the symbol -x- is indicative of an individual's mark; i.e. that he could not write. Some of the entries include the actual date of the marriages as well as the date of the bonds. Every effort has been made to transcribe exactly as entered in this publication, without any attempt to change or correct spelling or abbreviations. |
